Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer hasn’t announced whether he plans to start Sam Bradford or Shaun Hill at quarterback when his team takes on the Titans Sunday. But either way, the Tennessee defense is probably licking its chops.
The Titans stumbled through a 3-13 campaign last season, but featured one of the best pass defenses in the league. They allowed the seventh-fewest passing yards in the league, and are set up stymy either Hill or Bradford.
Since the Vikings surrendered a 2017 first-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for Bradford after Teddy Bridgewater tore his ACL, it seems likely that he would be the first choice to step under center. Bradford, 28, has failed to live up to his billing as the 2010 No. 1 overall pick, posting an 81 career QB rating in six seasons. Ironically, his numbers aren’t all that dissimilar from Hill’s, who has a career 85.2 rating in 46 career games.
If Minnesota is going to score points in this game, Adrian Peterson will probably have to have a big performance. The Titans were ranked 15th against the run last year.
Speaking of the running game, that was the area the Tennessee looked to address most in the offseason. The Titans picked up DeMarco Murray from the Eagles and also drafted Derrick Henry out of the University of Alabama. A Vikings run defense that finished 16th in the league in 2015 may have its hands full.
With a lot of the pressure off, Marcus Mariota seems to be in position to build off his respectable rookie campaign, which saw him complete 62.2 percent of his throws and pass for 2,818 yards and 19 touchdowns. The Titans may finally be inching back towards respectability, and they’re set up for a Week 1 win.
The experts are mostly split on the matchup. At CBS Sports, the panel favors the Vikings by a 5-3 margin, while seven of the nine ESPN analysts who have picked so far are also going with the road team.
