Australia and Japan share a hugely competitive rivalry. Beginning in 1956, the two Asian nations have met 23 times with eight wins for Japan, eight draws and seven losses.
Since suffering a 2-1 upset loss to the United Arab Emirates at home, Japan bounced-back to return a brace of victories against Thailand in September and then Iraq on October 6.
Based on current standings in Group B of their World Cup qualifying group, only one point but three places separate top of the table Australia from fourth placed Japan and a clear win for either side will only fortify their qualification hopes.
Since the start of the year, Australia have demonstrated a high-scoring edge with big wins over the likes of Tajikstan and Jordan, while also scoring wins over Greece, Iraq, the UAE and, most recently, a 2-2 draw with Saudi Arabia in Jeddah earlier this month.
While Japan have a core, functional, spine, they also have a number of creative players capable of winning a match on their own. Shinji Kagawa is one of the most brilliant pass masters in Germany, for instance, while Keisuke Honda is an undeniable set-piece specialist.
Australia, meanwhile, have their own players who can ask constant questions of the Japanese defence as Tim Cahill continues to heighten his international career with a succession of mature performances, while Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic has also proven to be an asset.
Australia and Japan meet in Melbourne for a FIFA World Cup qualifier match on Tuesday.
